Dr. Betty Johnson (B.J.) Snell, Professor Emeritus in the School of Nursing, joined the CSUF community in 2002 and subsequently developed the Midwifery and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Graduate Program. Along with teaching in the Graduate Program, Snell created and was the owner and clinical director of Beach Cities Midwifery and Women’s Health Care and the Beach Side Birth Centers in Laguna Hills, Long Beach, and Corona. She was a leader in California and nationally as she promoted independent practice authority for nurse-midwives.
Both her students and her patients remember her calm support during their most challenging moments. Her leadership not only shaped her practice and inspired her students but also influenced the CSUF School of Nursing and the broader midwifery community. Snell was a midwife, an educator, a mentor, an advocate, a wife, and a mother loved by all. Her impact on women’s health education and the midwifery profession is indelible and her legacy lives on through all the lives she has touched.
In memory of Dr. Snell, we are fundraising to support the memorial scholarship named in her honor. This endowed memorial scholarship will keep BJ’s memory alive in the School of Nursing and our midwifery program. The scholarship will be awarded to those midwifery students who embody her qualities of care and compassion as well as excellence in midwifery practice and leadership.
We invite you to honor Dr. BJ Snell’s legacy as we work together to help educate excellent midwife and women’s healthcare professionals in California!
