Maywood Education Fair 2020!

The Maywood Education Fair brings academic opportunities and college resources to the city of Maywood and the surrounding communities in Southeast Los Angeles. The event focuses on the importance of "community cultural wealth" which showcases the talents, strengths and experiences that students of color have and has a goal is to develop a college-going culture in the area. 

The Maywood Education Fair is an event organized, planned, and executed by the second year graduate students in the Master's of Science in Higher Education (MSHE) program at California State University, Fullerton. This annual event, going into its 11th year, demonstrates the possibilities of pursuing higher education to local students and their families. Programs and workshops include financial aid, college admissions and community resources, as well as fun and engaging activities for community members.

The Maywood Education Fair has reached more than 5,900 residents in the past 10 years. We aim to connect with even more residents in Southeast LA and offer as many scholarships possible to deserving high school students. Last year, we were able to award 24 scholarships of $1,000 each. 

The city of Maywood places a large emphasis on education, yet remains under-resourced. Residents are majority Latinx with less than 50% of the residents (age 25 and older) being high school graduates, and an even smaller percentage pursue higher education. With guidance, support and resources, students in this community now  imagine themselves as future college students. 

This year, MSHE cohort chose an inspirational theme -  

Imagination. Development. Empowerment. Imaginacion. Desarollo. Empoderamiento.

Imagination for a better future. Development into an educated individual. Empowerment to improve the future of oneself, family, and community.
