The Willard & Virginia Dickey Instrumental Music Education Student Teacher Scholarship is becoming a permanent scholarship endowment for Cal State Fullerton Instrumental Music Student Teachers in tribute to Dr. Marc Dickey’s parents. It takes a minimum of five years to complete the degree and credential work in CSU Fullerton’s rigorous and highly regarded Instrumental Music Teacher Training program. As these students prepare for this honorable profession that “gives something back” and shapes the lives of future generations through the study of music, many are struggling with the cost of their education by the time they reach the student teaching stage. CSUF’s very successful instrumental music teacher credential program has a virtual 100% placement rate!
The purpose of the Willard & Virginia Dickey Instrumental Music Education Student Teacher Scholarship is to provide financial support for Instrumental Music Education students who are entering the credentialing phase in preparation for a career in Music Education. Recipients of the awards will be selected by nominations of music education faculty in the School of Music. The total amount offered annually will be determined based on the amount available in the endowment.
The Willard & Virginia Dickey Instrumental Music Education Student Teacher Scholarship is being established by CSUF emeritus music professor Dr. Marc Dickey to honor his parents, who always encouraged him in anything he pursued, especially when it was musical. Virginia Dickey was a flautist in the Toledo (OH) Symphony Orchestra and maintained a large private flute studio for many years. Willard Dickey was a violist in the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and was a master repair technician of woodwind instruments. Dr. Dickey was a full-time, tenured member of the CSUF School of Music faculty from 1988-2019, and was Director of the School of Music from 2005-2017. He continues to teach part-time at CSUF.
